MORGAN MURTAUGH EXTENDS DEBATE INVITATION TO SUSAN DAVIS FOR POLITIFEST CONFERENCE

SAN DIEGO — Morgan Murtaugh, Republican candidate for California’s 53rd congressional district, this week joined with the nonpartisan public affairs conference Politifest to extend an invitation to Congresswoman Susan Davis for a candidates’ debate Oct. 6.

The conference, hosted by the nonprofit news service Voice Of San Diego, brings together public officials, political hopefuls and issue experts for a schedule of panels and discussions to enlighten voters prior to the November elections. Davis initially promised voters a debate with her Republican opponent when she spoke at a town hall meeting Aug. 4, but since then has failed to respond to inquiries by Murtaugh, including a publicly released certified letter sent to Davis shortly thereafter.

“It’s my sincere belief that the honorable congresswoman intends to take her pledge seriously, and join with me to discuss the crucial issues facing this district and our nation,” Murtaugh announced. “We are happy to offer our participation to Politifest, which will provide the highest possible profile for our exchange of ideas in front of an audience actively versed in the issues of the campaign.”

Politifest is slated to run all day on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, part of the University of San Diego. Events include discussion of the competing ballot initiatives for the current site of SDCCU Stadium, an overview of the statewide Proposition 10 rent control referendum, a mayor’s forum featuring the political leaders of San Diego, Tijuana, and Sacramento, and more. Information can be found at www.voiceofsandiego.org/politifest.

If you live in San Diego, make sure you look into extending your support to CONNECTING Hope. I had a wonderful time at their first annual Hoops4Hope event today at Lincoln High School and supporting what they do for our community: raising money for youth and creating opportunities for young adults in San Diego.

Kavanaugh and Ford

Due process under the law is part of our Bill of Rights and one of the core tenants of our nation.

I believe something traumatizing happened to Dr. Ford. I also believe Brett Kavanaugh when he says he didn’t do it. Both testimonies were compelling, both stories seem honest. Both stories deserve to be heard.

This is very well said:

For years, women who came forward with allegations of sexual harassment and assault were ignored, laughed at, and pushed to the side. They were not given a platform to share their experiences or their side of the story. That is wrong. Women deserve just as much as an opportunity as any man to seek out justice.

Treating women wrong in the past does not mean to take their word as absolute truth or law without question today.

#BelieveWomen does not mean women cannot lie, forget, misunderstand or misrepresent. It means women deserve the same chance as anyone to share their experiences, their accusations, and their side of a story.

The man being accused also deserves the same respect and opportunity to defend himself. He should not be assumed guilty without a fair chance to present his side of the story.

Questioning allegations of sexual assault, especially those that happened 30+ years ago with no corroborating witnesses, does not mean you hate women. It does not mean you support sexual assault. It does not mean that you don’t think accusations of rape, assault, and harassment are incredibly serious.

It means you care about facts and due process.

Dr. Ford was extremely brave to come forward and share her story today. She wished to remain anonymous, yet her identity was leaked and her life was upended.

Her bravery and testimony does not mean Brett Kavanaugh is guilty of sexual assault.

Some say “he is not on trial he is interviewing for a job promotion”. That’s true, but it’s an extremely public job promotion that has also upended his life.

His life has been forever altered by these accusations ranging from assault to organizing gang rape as a teenager. He deserves the same chance Dr. Ford did to speak and defend himself. Americans ought to give him that chance.

MORGAN MURTAUGH INVITED TO JOIN NATION’S MILLENNIAL LEADERS AT FORBES CONFERENCE

SAN DIEGO — Forbes Magazine, one of the leading business publications in the world, has invited Morgan Murtaugh, Republican candidate for California’s 53rd congressional district, to speak as a special guest at its prestigious Under 30 conference of millennial leaders.

Murtaugh, at 26 years old, became the youngest candidate running for Congress on a major party ticket during the state’s open primary this past June, and would become the youngest woman ever to serve in Congress should she defeat 74-year-old Susan Davis.

“I’m incredibly honored that Forbes would select me for its Under 30 Summit,” Murtaugh said. “One of the cornerstones of my campaign is to involve millennials in the political process, after we have been raised to become so disaffected with the institutions of government. It’s my mission to convince my generation: We not only can make a change, but we are the change.”

A perfect example of the need for that change, Murtaugh said, is her opponent herself, who has represented the region for the past 18 years.

“During her nearly two decades in Washington, my opponent has sponsored exactly two bills that became law — and one of them was renaming a post office,” Murtaugh said. “The other was more than 10 years ago. In the meantime, she has taken so many free trips abroad that the local press has dubbed her ‘The Junket Queen of San Diego’. She has such a sense of entitlement that she hasn’t even updated her campaign website since 2010.

“This is exactly why people of my generation become disillusioned — because they feel that the decision has already been made for them, because they’re treated as if it won’t make a difference if they vote,” Murtaugh added. “My message to the conference is: Your vote is an instrument of political revolution. But it will only work if you use it.”

The Under 30 Summit runs this weekend in Boston from Sunday, Sept. 30, through Wednesday, Oct. 3. Murtaugh is scheduled to speak on Monday, Oct. 1, after which she’ll fly back to San Diego early to resume the campaign trail.
